Music

Our Vision for Music

“Music is a universal language that embodies one of the highest forms of creativity. A high-quality music education should engage and inspire pupils to develop a love of music and their talent as musicians, and so increase their self-confidence, creativity and sense of achievement. As pupils progress, they should develop a critical engagement with music, allowing them to compose, and to listen with discrimination to the best in the musical canon.” National Curriculum 2014

At our school we aim to ensure all pupils:

  • are able to enjoy and express themselves creatively through composing and performance, making connections to the world around them and making sense of their experiences.
  • develop a sense of group identity and togetherness through composing, rehearsing and performing music with others, to an audience.
  • develop skills for life including, self-discipline and creativity, aesthetic sensitivity and fulfilment.
  • develop an ability to listen to, understand influences and appreciate a wide variety of music, including different styles, periods and cultures.
  • have opportunities to create and develop musical ideas using voices and instruments.

We intend that all pupils have opportunities within the music curriculum that will not only develop their knowledge and skills within the subject but enable them to unlock their innate creativity, in particular singing. We recognise the benefits that choral singing has:

  • improving mood and focus’ attention
  • improving social skills and a feeling of togetherness
  • exercises your brain and also benefits your breathing, posture and relaxes muscles

Singing at St Mary’s definitely ‘feeds our mind, body and spirit.’ We have teamed up with the Rodolfus Foundation The Rodolfus Foundation Choral Academy Hackney to provide our pupils with weekly choral singing lessons with a specialist teacher, starting September 2021 and look forward to exploring new opportunities together in the future. Themes within the subject are linked to other curriculum areas where possible. In addition, St Mary’s uses Charanga www.charanga.com to ensure our children access further opportunities for areas of music such as composition and the playing of instruments.
