This morning 23rd February 2022 St Mary’s dressed as ducklings and supported Kelly Casey, a parent at the school, on her fundraising walk. Kelly is walking 10,000 steps every day in February to raise money for the charity Brain Tumour Research.

In line with the schools’ mission statement, the great community including, children, staff, parents, governors and friends came together to help Kelly walk her 10,000 steps around Clissold Park. Everyone gathered in the school playground to do a warm up, led by Kelly (aka Derick the Duck). It certainly got everyone laughing, smiling and ready for the walk.

“Seeing the whole school community come together in support was fantastic. This is what St Mary’s is all about, community. Our children are great role models when it comes to being kind, sharing love and being hope carriers. The enthusiasm to support Kelly and raise money has made me and the staff team very proud.” Headteacher Jane O’Brien

Kelly, parent of Kian in Year 6 was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumour in 2015. In 2020, after finding out that the tumour had grown again, she started chemotherapy for a second time. Her follow up results are due in March. Kelly is passionate about helping children and young people and has given a lot to St Marys School community and beyond. Throughout, she has shown continual strength and positivity and is a true inspiration to everyone that knows her. If you meet Kelly as she walks around Hackney, dressed as Derick the Duck, please say hello. She has a wicked sense of humour and the ability to make everyone smile. Sally Williams (ITV presenter) and Alan Carr (comedian) have also shown their support for Kelly as she raises money. If you would like to donate, please follow one of the links shown below.
